Fishing Reports
Salmon River
March 14, 2000
- River Level: The river is high. Water is flowing at 1,600 cfs,
and expected to remain at that level through tomorrow. Streamside
fishing is tough at this level, if not impossible.
- Hatches: Before the high waters, we had almost daily hatches
of small black and brown stoneflies, the usual fare.
- Fly Patterns: Egg sack patterns in a variety of colors rule.
Small black or brown stoneflies to immitate the naturals. Nymphs.
- 14-Day Forecast: Weather is beginning to warm again after a
brief cold spell. Temperatures moved into the 50s today, and should
remain abover freezing throughout remainder of week. Some fresh
steelhead are moving into the rivers, along with winter holdovers.
Fishing outlook is good.
Dear Flyfisher:
We scored several good fish last week, although you had to work for them.
We got skunked one day, but managed to get seven steelies on the next day,
landing three. Other days we had at least three on, scoring two one day
and one the following. They were good fish, though, ranging between five
and 12 pounds.
The river has been running high, fueled by rains, snowmelt and an open
release gate. Fish are moving onto their beds to spawn, although there are
plenty throughout the river. We've had some fair runs of fresh fish move
into the river, which has kept things active.
Egg sack patterns have been working best, although we have also picked up
some fish on stoneflies and nymphs. We'll be on the river the next few
days, and then I'll be heading off for the Keys for ten days of bone,
permit and tarpon.
After that, I'll be back at the Salmon River through the 15th of April,
when I switch over to the Delaware River fishery. Hope we can hook up.
