Fishing Report
from Islamorada Dear Flyfisher:
For the past few weeks through the end of
February, Ive been fishing in the Florida Keys, scouting the potential for offering
my flyfishing clients an opportunity to hook up with tarpon, bonefish, permit and redfish
as a way to celebrate the New Milennium.
While I was able to fill my personal quest
to catch a permit on a fly, the Flats fishing was only moderate to good in January,
although things are shaping up this month as big tarpon begin to move into the lower Keys.
They should be spreading out across the flats and throughout the length of the Keys this
month, and then start up the west coast of Florida toward Fort Myers.
For the most part, Ive been fishing
around Islamorada with a few local guides. If youd like to take a trip this
month, drop me a note or an e-mail, or leave a
message on my machine (607-722-2482, and Ill be able to arrange it. We can either
get together to pole the flats with one of the guides, or we can do some off-shore flats
wading together.
Ive also been prowling the flats on
my own, searching for prime fishing spots and regular feeding areas for bones, and
cruising lanes for tarpon. Ive picked up a good number of bonefish and several small
tarpon. But, my big catch was the 25-pound permit you see me holding. Based on my smile,
you can tell it was a fun moment.
I caught the permit while fishing beneath
the lights at one of the connecting bridges between the Keys. I could see several fish
working, and tossed my fly onto the nose of this one. Obviously, he ate it. Permit are a
great fighting fish, and this one was no exception. After the photo, I released him and
hes out there now, getting
bigger for next year.
At the moment, Im exploring the
potential for offering regular flats fishing to my clients during the early months of the
year 2000. Stay tuned, and Ill let you know what happens. See you on the river.
